World Cup Suwon from the first day on high level

SUWON - For twelve qualification rounds with 36 Korean players the World Cup in Suwon has been started today. They competed for twelve places in the next round of the tournament. Byung Soo Kim was the best of the twelve with four winning sets and an average of 1.304. Jeen Hee Yoo escaped through the back door: he placed himself after a bad start as twelfth player for the next round, but made the highest run of the opening day: thirteen!
 
The Korean opening gala in the magnificent Suwon Youth Culture Center had many highlights, such as the match of Young II Kwun who won in six and eight innings (2.142 average) against Jun Young Yang, Byung Soo Kim who deveated Kyung Wook Lee (2.000) and Yun Lee Sung in his match against Gi Hyun Kim with 1.875 average.
 
That level of playing rarely has been seen on the first day of other World Cups. Twenty of the 36 players finished after two matches in the first qualifying session over 1.000 average. Su Yeong Park, just to mention something, ended up after the first day with 1.086 as one of the worst six players.
 
Byung Soo Kim was the only one who didn't lose one set. He led the ranking of players whowere seeded for the next round before Sung Yun Lee, Bo Yoon Jung and Young Soon Shin. Jeen Hee Yoo, seeded as twelfth and last player, had the highest average with 1.339, mainly due to his run of thirteen which he needed badly in the deciding set against Sin Yoon Myoung to survive, because he had lost his first match against Dae Woong Lee 2-1.
 
Tomorrow, the first foreigners enter the tournament: six Japanese, including Takashi Sannakanishi, Kazutaka Takao and Myashita Hodozuka, the Dane Allan Lys Jensen, the Turk Baygin Emrah and the Vietnamese Hoang Hung and Hoang Mai Le Phuoc.
 
The first European players have also arrived in Suwon. Jef Philipoom said that he spent the day after his long flight very useful. ,,I went out to Icheon for a training with Roland (Forthomme), Glenn (Hoffman) and Eddy (Leppens) for six hours in the billiard room of a Korean player.''
 
Allan Lys Jensen also arrived this afternoon after a flight from London. ,,I've done a few nice naps underway, tomorrow I hope to be fit,''the Dane said.
