The first round of the Lier World Cup main draw is now complete. The 32 players were divided into eight groups of four, with the top two in each group advancing to Saturday’s Round of 16.
The first day of the main draw delivered some spectacular performances, with Marco Zanetti setting the pace, while Sameh Sidhom, Berkay Karakurt and Jérémy Bury also produced outstanding numbers.
Zanetti in a class of his own
Marco Zanetti was the standout player of the opening round.
The Italian won all three of his matches in Group D and finished with a remarkable 120 points in just 52 innings, for a 2.307 general average. He also produced a high run of 15.
Zanetti therefore tops the overall ranking after the group stage, ahead of Sameh Sidhom and Dick Jaspers.
His group was particularly impressive, with Jung Han Heo finishing second at 2.076, while Korea's Ye Sung Jeong recorded an extraordinary 2.106 average but had to settle for third place.
Sidhom and Jaspers also perfect
Only a handful of players managed the perfect record of three wins.
Sameh Sidhom was one of them. The Egyptian won Group H with 6 match points, scoring 120 points in 54 innings for a superb 2.222 average.
Dick Jaspers was equally convincing. The Dutchman also collected six points and needed only 59 innings to reach his 120 points, finishing at 2.033.
Both players now head into the knockout phase as serious contenders.
Berkay Karakurt explodes onto the scene
One of the most impressive performances came from Turkey's Berkay Karakurt.
Karakurt finished Group G at an extraordinary 2.400 general average, scoring 108 points in only 45 innings. He won four match points and produced high runs of 9 and 9.
His group was a spectacular one, with Vietnam's Phuong Vinh Bao also producing a phenomenal 2.297 average. Bao finished second and will join Karakurt in the Round of 16.
Bury: a perfect three out of three
For France, Jérémy Bury continues his excellent tournament.
After qualifying through the previous stages, Bury won all three of his matches in Group F. He finished with 120 points in 67 innings, a 1.791 general average and high runs of 8 and 8.
That puts him fourth overall after the group stage, behind only Zanetti, Sidhom and Jaspers.
Bury will therefore enter Saturday's knockout stage full of confidence.
Caudron and Merckx keep Belgium alive
The Belgian home crowd still has plenty to cheer about.
Frédéric Caudron topped Group E with 5 match points and a 1.875 average, while Eddy Merckx qualified from Group C with a 1.883 average, despite finishing second in his group behind Glenn Hofman.
Peter Ceulemans also advanced, finishing second in Group B behind Dick Jaspers with 1.463.
For Belgium, however, Roland Forthomme was eliminated after finishing fourth in Group C.
Vietnam continues its strong World Cup
Vietnam has once again made a major impact in Lier.
Phuong Vinh Bao was one of the statistical highlights of the day with his 2.297 average, while Quyet Chien Tran advanced from Group E in second place at 1.632.
Thanh Luc Tran also reached the knockout stage, finishing second in Group H with 1.603.
Meanwhile, Dinh Quoc Nguyen, who had fought his way through the qualifying rounds, could not reproduce that success in Group B and finished fourth.
Ye Sung Jeong: an incredible average, but no knockout stage
Another remarkable statistic belongs to Ye Sung Jeong.
The Korean finished Group D with 99 points in only 47 innings, giving him an astonishing 2.106 general average. He also produced the highest run of the tournament so far: 18.
Yet despite those numbers, Jeong finished third in the group and is eliminated.
It is perhaps the clearest illustration of just how tough the Lier World Cup has been: a player averaging more than 2.100 can still fail to reach the Round of 16.
The Round of 16 is set
The first knockout stage will be played this Saturday, with 16 players remaining.
The group stage has already produced exceptional numbers, but from now on there is no room for error: one match, one winner, one place in the quarter-finals.
Among the favourites, Zanetti, Sidhom, Jaspers and Bury arrive after perfect group stages, while Berkay Karakurt and Phuong Vinh Bao have shown that the younger generation is more than ready to challenge the established stars.
And with Caudron, Merckx, Ceulemans, Heo, Hofman, Tran, Bao and the other qualifiers still in contention, Saturday's Round of 16 promises another spectacular day in Lier.
The race for the Lier World Cup title is now down to 16.
