The 14th Women’s World 3-Cushion Championship got underway yesterday in Gradignan, France, near Bordeaux, with the 24 players divided into eight groups of three.
The top two players from each group advanced to today’s Round of 16, which begins at 12:00 local time.
Heo Chae Won sets the pace
The strongest performance of the opening day came from Korea's Heo Chae Won.
She won both of her group matches and finished with an impressive 1.136 general average, the best overall figure of the group stage. She also produced the highest run of the day, a 10.
Heo was not the only player to finish unbeaten. Defending champion Therese Klompenhouwer also collected four match points, winning Group A with a 1.041 average.
The Dutch presence is further strengthened by Karina Jetten, who won Group G with four points and a 0.847 average.
Karakasli and Choi among the other group winners
Turkey's Güzin Müjde Karakaşlı also made a successful start, winning Group C with four points and a 0.819 average. Vietnam's Nguyen Thi Lien finished second and also advanced.
Korea's Da Young Choi won Group H with four points at 0.781, while Japan's Ayaka Miyashita took second place.
Denmark's Nana Petersen topped Group D with four points and a 0.543 average, ahead of Vietnam's Nguyen Thi Bich Tram.
Declunder through for France
France will be represented in the knockout stage by Magali Declunder, the reigning French champion.
Declunder won Group F with four match points, scoring 50 points in 102 innings for a 0.490 general average. Greece's Litsa Mavridoglou finished second, while Austria's Monika Steinberger was eliminated.
It was a successful start for Declunder, who now faces Colombia's Claudia Lalinde in the Round of 16.
Lalinde finished second in Group G with 0.642, behind Jetten.
A strong international field
The group stage also produced some interesting performances from several nations.
Colombia has three players through to the Round of 16, with Johana Sandoval finishing second in Group B and Claudia Lalinde and others also advancing. Sandoval recorded a 0.507 average.
Vietnam also has several representatives in the knockout stage, including Nguyen Duc Yen Sinh, who finished second in Group E with 0.574, and Nguyen Thi Bich Tram and Nguyen Thi Lien.
Germany's Steffi Tram won Group E with three match points and a 0.649 average, while Greece's Mavridoglou advanced in second place from Group F.

With the group stage now behind them, there is no more room for error. The road to the Women's World Championship title continues with 16 players, eight matches and eight places in the quarter-finals at stake.
