LIMA - Twelve Europeans and four Asians will continue the world championship in Lima in the main tournament today. The Koreans and the Belgians are the best represented countries with three players among the top sixteen. Frédéric Caudron against Torbjörn Blomdahl is one of the big clashes in the first matches in the knockout phase.
Two players from the top ten of the world are missing in the final phase. Filipos Kasidokostas didn't play in Lima due to the precarious financial position of his federation. Kyung-Roul Kim was eliminated by the surprisingly strong Jean Paul de Bruijn.
The Dutchman leads the group of sixteen players in the scedule. He was one of five players who didn't lose a set in the qualifying rounds and played the highest average with 1.800 before Dani Sánchez and Heo Jung Han (1.730), Javier Palazón (1.551) and Eddy Merckx (1.304).
The Belgian Eddy Leppens played the highest average (2.240) of all sixteen players, Tayfun Tasdemir made the highest run (14), Eddy Merckx 12 and three players, Eddy Leppens, Martin Horn and Ryuuji Umeda, made runs of ten.
The schedule seems mainly seriously for the players in the lower part of eight. There is a chance that Dick Jaspers plays against Frédéric Caudron or Torbjörn Blomdahl in the quarter finals, if he wins himself against Jung Han Heo in the first matches of today. Also Jérémy Bury, Eddy Leppens, Dani Sánchez and Martin Horn are classified in the second half of the schedule.
On top is Jean Paul de Bruijn, who starts against Ryuuji Umeda in the first session of the day. The winner of that match meets in the quarterfinals the winner of Sung-Won Choi-Marco Zaneti. Eddy Merckx is facing Jae Ho Cho today, Lütfi Cenet plays against Javier Palazón.
