The defending champion produces an extraordinary 40 in 10 innings, while Van Erp and Löwe also make perfect starts
The 78th World Championship 3-Cushion Individual got underway in Blois on Wednesday, and the opening day immediately produced a spectacular performance from defending champion Frédéric Caudron ??.
Caudron needed just 10 innings to reach 40 points against France's Maxime Panaia, winning 40-17 at an extraordinary 4.000 average. His run of 15 was also the highest of the day. It is difficult to imagine a more emphatic opening statement from the reigning World Champion.
Caudron is already at the top of Group A with 4 match points and 4.000 overall average, while Panaia remains second after his opening victory over Merlin Romero.
Van Erp and Löwe enjoy perfect starts
Two players also managed to finish the first day with two victories.
In Group G, Jean van Erp ?? produced an excellent opening performance. He first defeated Dimitrios Seleventas 40-25 in just 20 innings, before adding a major scalp with a 40-30 victory over Berkay Karakurt ?? in 32 innings.
Van Erp therefore leads the group with 4 points and a 1.538 average.
In Group C, Tom Löwe ?? also took maximum points. The German defeated Pierre Soumagne 40-37 in 32 innings and then beat Eddy Merckx 40-37 in 39 innings.
With 4 points and a 1.126 average, Löwe currently sits at the top of a group containing two experienced players in Soumagne and Merckx.
Zanetti and Taşdemir make strong entrances
Several of the established names also opened their campaigns with impressive victories.
Marco Zanetti ?? needed only 15 innings to beat Mohamed Abdin 40-16, recording a superb 2.666 average.
Tayfun Taşdemir ?? was equally convincing against Belgian Roland Forthomme ??, winning 40-28 in 19 innings at 2.105. Forthomme had already defeated Atsunobu Itai in his first match, so he remains very much in contention.
Myung Woo Cho ??, the winner of the recent Lier World Cup, also began with a victory, beating William Villanueva 40-38 in 26 innings. Cho finished on 1.538 with a best run of 10.
Strong starts for Sidhom, Horn and Blomdahl
The first day also saw victories for a number of other major contenders.
Sameh Sidhom ?? defeated Mashhour Abu Tayeh 40-25 in 23 innings at 1.739. His group also features Korea's Son Jun Hyuk, who produced the same 1.739 average in his victory over Abu Tayeh.
Martin Horn ?? beat Erick Tellez 40-28 in 23 innings, averaging 1.739, while Torbjörn Blomdahl ?? defeated Thomas Knudsen 40-39 in 36 innings.
Blomdahl's group is one of the intriguing ones, with Dick Jaspers ?? still waiting to play his opening match.
Jeong and Catano also make their mark
There were plenty of eye-catching individual results outside the main favourites.
Ye Sung Jeong ?? defeated Tolgahan Kiraz 40-30 in 22 innings, producing 1.818 average and a run of 11.
Huberney Catano ?? was another convincing winner, beating Hong Chiem Thai 40-24 in 23 innings at 1.739.
And in Group L, Raymundo Munoz ?? produced a strong 40-19 win over Arnim Kahofer in 24 innings, averaging 1.666.
The qualification picture remains wide open
The first day has only provided a partial picture of the groups. Some players have already completed both matches, while others have yet to enter the competition.
Mikael Devogelaere ?? made an excellent start in Group I, beating Behzat Cetin 40-10 in 21 innings at 1.904, while Phuong Vinh Bao has yet to play.
In Group O, Ruben Legazpi ?? opened with a narrow 40-39 win over Hong Thai Chau ??, while Jérémy Bury ?? is still waiting for his first match.
The same is true for several other major names, meaning the second day will dramatically reshape the standings.
With 32 players advancing to the knockout stage and 16 being eliminated, every remaining group match will carry enormous importance.
But after day one, one number stands above all others: 40 points in 10 innings.
Frédéric Caudron has certainly wasted no time reminding everyone in Blois that the World Champion is here to defend his crown.
