MAGDEBURG – The 1st BC Magdeburg celebrated the Bundesliga championship this Sunday with an 8-0 victory at home. The team, which led by 1 point ahead of BC Weywiesen, increased the margin to 3 match points on Sunday because they won their last match and Weywiesen lost their final match to Elversberg. The champions steamrolled over GT Buer with the maximum score. Ömer Karakurt had the upper hand against Simon Blondeel (50-37 in 30), Dion Nelin was barely threatened by Ramazan Durdu (50-35 in 28), Markus Schönhoff shared in the success with a win over Kersten Reinartz (40-38 in 31), and Falko Willenberger started the winning streak against Holger Kroke with 40-23 in 34.
The victory signaled the start of the championship celebrations. BC Magdeburg had previously been crowned German champions, back then with Dick Jaspers, Dion Nelin, and Markus Schönhoff. The German DBU President came to present the medals in Magdeburg and congratulated the team, which will remain unchanged next year.
This Saturday, the first day of this double weekend, Magdeburg maintained its lead over Weywiesen with a 6-2 victory over BCC Witten. For Markus Schönhoff, the victory was not the only thing of great importance; the German team captain also achieved a personal success. "I am playing in the Bundesliga for 36 years now and played my best match ever today," Markus said proudly. He defeated Abdulkadir Kavak 40-23 in 18 innings with a highest break of 16.
On that Saturday, Ömer Karakurt defeated Murat Gökmen 50-33 in 35, Dion Nelin defeated Hakan Gülter 50-13 in 22, and only Falko Willenberger lost to Berkutay Gönüoglu 40-36 in 58 innings.
BC Weywiesen held out the race against Magdeburg the longest, but was defeated on Sunday, the final day. BC Elversberg had brought out heavy artillery. Frédéric Caudron was the top player and defeated Torbjörn Blomdahl 50-25 in 21 innings. Only Roland Forthomme won for Weywiesen, defeating Thorsten Frings 50-49.
BC Magdeburg closed the season with a three-point lead over BC Weywiesen in the final standings, and an eight-point lead over BC Elversberg and BC International.
