AARHUS - The two Turkish ladies, who became world champions with the country team two days ago, face each other in the first round at the individual European championships. Guzin Mujde Karakasli starts the main tournament against Gülsen Degener, the only two Turks in the field of 16 players remaining from the preliminary rounds. The Dutch have the upper hand with four players in these knock-outs, they have with Therese Klompenhouwer the titleholder and main contender for European gold. The French, Turks, Germans, Belgians and Danes are with two players, Sweden and Greece with one.
Therese Klompenhouwer immediately made her mark on the preliminary rounds with the leading position in the field of 24 players. The Dutch won her two matches with 1.282 on average. Second in that ranking is also a Dutch player, Monique van Exter with 4 points and 0.877 ahead of Charlotte Sörensen, Guzin Mujde Karakasli and Steffi Träm. Those were the five players who won their two games in the eight groups of three.
Most notable matches in the preliminary were Therese Klompenhouwer's and Greece's Litsa Mavridoglou good match (25-18 in 20), Karina Jetten and Magali Declunder's draw score (25-25 in 46), Monique van Exter's win against Gülsen Degener (25-17 in 25) and Charlotte Sörensen's win against Danielle Le Bruyn (25-23 in 30).
