RUMST - Eddy Merckx is the final winner in the tournament played at Op de Meir. The Belgian top player won the final in a group of 3 against Barry van Beers and Marc Celen. The tournament is played in three classes and started on May 11 with a total of 158 players.
The A final was played this week, the B final is on 9 July and the C final on 15 July. The different classes have played almost every day with the exception of the days that Op de Meir played the European Cup with the team in Porto.
Barry van Beers shone in the quarter-finals against Marc Donvil with a run of 21, one carom less than his personal record.
The semi-finals were played between groups of three players:
Davy van Havere, Martin Spoormans and Eddy Merckx
Barry van Beers, Mark Roofthooft and Patrick Mintjens
Marc Celen, Danny Wuyts and Peter Stuives
That eventually led to the final group with Eddy Merckx, Barry van Beers and Marc Celen. In this group, Merckx won against Celen 50-29 in 24, Van Beers beat Celen 50-22 in 38 and finally Merckx won the match against Van Beers 50-43 in 26.
