GANDIA - The Murcia billiards team with Juan David Zapata and Carlos Anguita has won the Spanish championship for regional selections. The winning team defeated the Catalan team in the final. The nine teams that competed for the Spanish championship came into action with four players.
The later champion won against Valencia in the semi-finals 3-1, the Catalan team beat Madrid in a thrilling match 3-1.
The nine teams were divided into three groups in the qualifications. The Catalans made the best impression with an average of 1,231 and Armando Moreno as the best player with 1,905 on average.
In the final phase, the PBA champion Juan David Zapata shone against Peñalva in the semi-finals (40-14 in 12 innings), Adrian Legzpi also played a magnificent match against Esteve Mata (1.818). The victory of the youngest Legazpi could not bring Madrid into the final.
With a solid performance, Murcia dominated the final with Carlos Anguita (1,753) playing the best match. With the victory, Murcia was back on the top stage for the first time after 17 years. The champions were: David Zapata, Carlos Anguita, Jesús Jiménez, José Antonio Carrasco and Mario Mercader. The losing finalist played with Armando Moreno, Esteve Mata, Juan Carlos Pareras and Joan Espinasa.
Carlos Anguita was happy with the team's title. ''It had been a long time since we won with Murcia, so that makes the title more special. This is not the most important title in Spain, but all regions are competing. The tournament is wonderful to play, everyone is fighting hard for the positions.''
