LIER - Those who travelled to the Mister 100 in Lier on Wednesday got to see a touch of top three-cushion from one of Belgium's greatest billiard players. Roland Forthomme, still best known as co-holder of the world record for highest run (28), shone once again with a brilliant performance during the third preliminary round of the Super Cup. In a match against another well-known Belgian, Martin Spoormans, the master of amazing outliers finished the 40 caroms in 7 innings: 40-5.
That was the highlight of the evening and maybe of the entire Super cup. The unleashed Forthomme started the match with 10, made 2, 2 and 1 for an intermediate score of 15-4 in 4 and finished the match with 8, 6 and 11. Spoormans could only counter score in the equalizer with 1. Forthomme finished Group C with three wins against Francis Forton, Martin Spoormans and Andy de Bondt and with 1.875 on average, runs 13 and 11. Andy de Bondt finished as runner up and goes along to the quarter-finals of the Supercup on Friday 1 September in the Mister 100.
Three players finished with 2 match points after balancing each other in the matches. Andy de Bondt was by far the best in average after his victory over Martin Spoormans in 19 innings.
Tonight, Thursday, the last group shows up in the preliminary rounds and the quarter-finalists are known: the players for Group D are Eddy Merckx, Peter Ceulemans, Philippe Vandendriessche, Marc Celen.
