Michael Nilsson appealed to his suspension and can play in Viersen

NORRTELJE/STOCKHOLM - The six month suspension imposed upon Michael Nilsson after the Swedish Nationals has been changed into a 12 month suspended sentence. The Swedish billiard player appealed against his punishment by the Carom committee of his federation, officially ratified by Mats Norén, member of the board.

The decision was reversed today, by the entire board. Kurt Roos, the chairman: ,,We have looked at the facts once more, and decided on a suspended sentence. Michael Nilsson may now play the WC in Viersen, and also the EC in Brandenburg.''

The suspension had been imposed as a result of a conflict about sponsorship during the Swedish Nationals. Nilsson withdrew from that tournament, he did not show up for the quarterfinals, but he did play in the Danish league on that same day. It prompted the carom committee to take him out of competition for six months.

Kurt Roos, 44 years old, chairman of the carom section and of the Swedish pool and snooker federation since 2009, now says the appeal by Nilsson has changed the outcome. ,,He is now on probation for 12 months, if he behaves like a proper athlete, he can continue to compete.''

The deate was caused by a misunderstanding about sponsor logo's during the Nationals. Roos: ,,In this case, the rules were not properly documented nor presented clearly to the players prior to the event.''

The carom committee had already presented Nalle Olsson to replace Nilsson in Viersen, but has now granted Nilsson permission to play that WC event, representing Sweden together with Torbjörn Blomdahl.
