GURI - Fourteen of the sixteen players were Koreans who moved as group winners to the next round. The Greek Apostolos Balogiannis disturbed the home party of the best starter in the whole field. Dae Kwon Shin, who finished his first match in 12 innings, was defeated in his second match by Balogiannis 30-26 in 29 and was only the second best runner-up. Marianne Mortensen from Denmark, who came from the women's championship, qualified fifteenth.
Sung Uk Oh led the ranking of winners with four match points and 1.714 ahead of Hae Chang Jung with 1.500 and Sung Yoon Jong 1.363.
The most notable players, with Dae Kwon Shon, who couldn't manage to win their group were Tae Kwan Kim, the younger brother of Haeng Jik Kim and reigning junior world champion.
