DOUARNENEZ - The Douarnenez Valdyz classical team is hunting for the record of victories in the Coupe d'Europe for classical teams next week, 23 to 26 March. The French triple title holder, featuring Raymund Swertz, Grégory Le Deventec and Marek Faus plays a home match and will welcome French teams from Andernos and Ronchin, the Dutch from De Hazelaar and BFR Sterkrade from Germany, among others, as competitors. The record title holder still is Cubri Etikon, the Dutch team that won five times in 2008, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014 with Jean Paul de Bruijn, Patrick Niessen and Henri Tilleman.
Jean Paul de Bruijn, Patrick Niessen and Henri Tilleman are the individual record holders with five titles in total ahead of Raymund Swertz with four, Marek Faus and Grégory Le Deventec with three.
The reigning champion Douarnenez is again the big favorite with the teams of Andernos (Gérassimopoulos, Legros, Baudoin) and Ronchin (Florent, Djoubri, Villiers) as main rivals from the home land. In the Dutch team De Hazelaar, Gert-Jan Veldhuizen, who became Dutch champion one cushion last week by beating Raymund Swertz in the final 120 in 3 innings, is one of the top guns. Patrick Niessen and Micha van Bochem appear in the German team BFR Sterkrade.
Douarnenez won the last Coupe d'Europe before the Corona era in 2020. The other teams at the podium were BC Oissel, CB Vic and Soissons.
