The level rose once again on Wednesday at the Ankara World Cup as the Pre-Qualification (PQ) round brought together the strongest survivors from the previous stages. While several players delivered impressive performances, one man clearly stole the spotlight: Germany's Tom Löwe, who produced the best numbers seen so far in the tournament.
With a remarkable 2.121 general average, Löwe topped the overall ranking of the sixteen group winners and emerged as the standout player of the day.
Löwe takes center stage
The German player dominated Group G in spectacular fashion.
He first defeated South Korea's Yang Seungmo 35-24 in only 14 innings, posting a stunning 2.500 match average, before following up with another convincing victory against Turkey's Seymen Ozbas, 35-22 in 19 innings.
Scoring 70 points in just 33 innings, Löwe finished far ahead of the field and established the highest average recorded in Ankara since the beginning of the qualification rounds.
At this stage of the event, the German looks capable of challenging anyone in the field.
Strong performances across the board
Behind Löwe, several players also made a strong statement.
Turkey's Tarik Yavuz finished second in the daily ranking with a 1.794 average, highlighted by a 35-point run in only 16 innings against Daniel Kristiansen.
Austria's Gerhard Kostistansky followed closely with 1.750, winning Group I with two convincing victories.
The Netherlands' Sam Van Etten and Egypt's Mahmoud Ayman both posted 1.707, confirming their status as serious contenders heading into the final qualification stage.
Three French players advance
France enjoyed one of its strongest days of the tournament, placing three players among the sixteen group winners.
Mikaël Devogelaere delivered the best French performance, topping Group A with a 1.555 average. He opened his day with a commanding victory over Vedat Yilmaz at 2.058 and finished sixth in the overall ranking of qualified players.
Pierre Soumagne continued his solid run in Ankara by winning Group E at 1.400, including an impressive 35-point finish in only 15 innings against Reggy Brouwers.
Maxime Panaia also remained unbeaten in Group F. His 1.372 average was backed up by two runs of 11, among the highest series recorded during the day.
The only disappointment for the French delegation came in Group P, where Kevin Vasseur finished runner-up behind Greece's Kostantinos Kokkoris and was eliminated despite winning one of his two matches.
Kokkoris keeps rolling
One day after posting the best average of the PPQ round, Greece's Kostantinos Kokkoris once again secured qualification.
The Greek player won Group P with a 1.186 average, defeating Kevin Vasseur and Belgium's Alain Saeijs to extend his unbeaten run through the qualification stages.
While his numbers were lower than those produced on Tuesday, Kokkoris continues to show remarkable consistency and remains one of the most dangerous players left in the draw.
